He was born to Jewish Family in Newton, Massachusetts in 1938.

In 1982, at age 44, he co-founded Renaissance Technologies, a hedge fund company just 1.5 miles from State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he was Chairman of the Mathematics Department for 10 years.

Today, Renaissance Technologies occupies a 50 acres campus and employs 300 people, about one third have PhDs in the Sciences, Statistics and Computer.
